We are a collection of like-minded individuals interested in promoting, participating in and enjoying the hobby of miniature engineering.
Many of our members build and operate miniature traction engine or railway locomotives, with
steam, battery electric, petrol/electric or petrol hydraulic power. In addition we also have members
who just like to help with the running of the railway or help out in other ways.
Not at all. Members come from many different backgrounds and non-engineers have built and run
their own projects, some from scratch and some from kits. Members are always willing to give help
and advice to anyone with a problem. It is not unusual to find self taught model engineers.
To build a model requires a workshop or access to a workshop. Either option should have basic
machine tools and again, members will give advice.
Only if you want to build one. Not everyone has the time, equipment or inclination to build their
own. An alternative is to purchase a ready-to-run engine which can be used on the societies track.
Would there be any way I could usefully contribute?
Running the miniature railway requires members to turn their hand to numerous necessary tasks.
On running days there are often only just enough members to operate the service. You could end up
controlling train movements from a signal box, manning a level crossing or driving a locomotive. All
the necessary training will be given. In addition, on working days (currently Thursdays) regular
maintenance might involve renewing track, painting woodwork, cutting back vegetation or even
laying concrete.

There is no requirement to live locally. However, potential members would likely take into account
travelling time and expense involved in regular attendance.

Yes. We do have junior membership and a Child Safeguarding Policy (but we are not a creche).
We do. The Society is open to applications from anybody – we do not discriminate.
